Only The Song Survives chords by John Hiatt

Guitar chords with lyrics

From the album Crossing Muddy Waters

I play this with my 3rd and 4th fingers constantly on the 3rd fret of the high E and B strings,
the only exception being the D/F# in the chorus which I prefer like a regular D with an additional
thumb on the 2nd fret of the low E string.

Intro: G C G x3

  G Cadd9
I woke her up twice in the middle of the night
                 G/B G/A G
To ask what her name is and where she might live
               Cadd9
To ask how many fingers she saw in this light
                G/B G/A G
To ask if she might know what gives

                     Cadd9
She said we rolled that Camaro, like a cowboy cigarette
                G/B G/A G
Out on the highway in a puddle of beer
                 Cadd9
That's just about how close to death you're gonna get
                G/B G/A G
Till the only thing standing is fear

     G D/F# G
Singing, oh darling, faces were changed
   C G/B G/A G
The names of the innocent, the story at five
       D/F# G
Oh darling, faces get strange
   C G/B G/A G
But only the song survives
  D/F# G
Ah ha_____

                      Cadd9
She said, now don't you remember they put a patch on your eye
                     G/B G/A G
Like Dread Pirate Roberts, you looked so unplanned
                   Cadd9
They cut off my wedding ring and you started to cry
             G/B G/A G
A one-eyed Niagara Falls man

     G D/F# G
Singing, oh darling, faces were changed
   C G/B G/A G
The names of the innocent, the story at five

Oh darling, faces get strange

But only the song survives

(Instrumental solo)

                Cadd9
I said, but I never married, I said with surprise
                 G/B G/A G
And is this the diamond you said that you lost
                  Cadd9
It was under my eyelids when they flushed out my eyes
                  G/B G/A G
Hell and I don't know what the thing cost

     G D/F# G
Singing, oh darling, faces were changed
   C G/B G/A G
The names of the innocent, the story at five
