Too serious to joke about?
Yes, guitars are dead serious, and so is the playing. We will help you along the way with this site, but is it to serious to joke about? No, not at all! Here are a few personal favourites..
- Did you hear about the bass player who was so chronically late he missed his own honeymoon?
- The keyboard player had to fill in with his left hand.
- Why was the lead guitarist stuck outside his front door?
- He couldn't find the right key and didn't know when to come in.
Who is our favourites?
Looking at my own list of favourite players I can see that I love these because they are different and where the first of their style. Being info the harder side of the rock, these are my all-time favourite guitarists.
- Angus Young (AC/DC)
- technical skill and stage presence, do we need to say more? His mix of catchy and technical is unique and a challenge for the rest of us. With his schoolboy outfit, signature duckwalk, and wild stage antics he creates a larger-than-life persona. I am lucky I have seen him in concert.
- Ace Frehley (Kiss)
- Without Ace the music of Kiss would not be a cachy and original as we are used to. Melodic solos, bluesy bends, and a raw, energetic approach that combines classic rock riffs with flashy, yet tasteful, lead work. Check out the early Kiss-albums and be inspired.
- Jimi Hendrix
- I consider him a "guitar god" because of his revolutionary approach to the instrument and his profound influence on the development of many genres like rock, blues, and electric music. Not to mention his innovative Use of fuzz, wah-wah and Uni-Vibe. I say "Ohhhh".
- Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
- I have met him several times and seen him live 14 times. His solos add a melodic touch to Metallica’s fast and aggressive music, and he incorporate scales and modal runs that make his solos that makes the music more interesting to listen to.
- Tom Morello (Rage against the machine)
- I do not want to copy his style, but the world need more unique guitar-players, people who are so unique that it is impossible to copy. Innovative use of effects, unconventional techniques, and a blend of heavy riffs with hip-hop-inspired rhythms. So easy, so hard!
... and favourite guitar solos?
- Ride on (AC/DC)
- On this song you will hear a more emotionally charged and bluesy AC/DC, a killer song, and on top is the best solo ever recorded. The phrasing is slower than we are used to, and Angus Young gives us slower bends and more sustained notes that let the emotion breathe.
- Free bird (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
- A guitar-solo full of intensity, length, and emotional depth. Starting slow, it builds momentum, with Gary Rossington and Allen Collins delivering a dynamic, soaring performance. To me, this solo is a masterclass
- Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd)
- To me David Gilmours emotionally charged solo has a perfect smooth phrasing and soulful bends, perfectly complementing the song's dark themes and music.
- November Rain (Guns n’ Roses)
- This song would'nt be much with out the solo by Slash. It elevate the dramatic feel and have become defining moments in the power ballad history. A typical song for its time, but is still stands strong because of the guitar-solo.
