4th Of July Chords by Aimee Mann

4th Of July chords by Aimee Mann (Ver. 2)

Guitar chords with lyrics

  • Capo on 2nd
Tuning: Standard (E A D G B E)

Difficulty: Advanced

This song uses some pretty unique chord voicings and I tried to capture those here.
She also uses several walk downs and walk ups throughout the song that I haven't seen in other versions.
[Note on chorus - Between the E chord and the C#m7, walk up the low E string on each beat,
stopping at F# and G#. E.g. on the first chorus, the F# would fall on "My" and the g# would fall on "God"]

Generally, she plays the root(lowest string) on the downbeat and then strums for the 2 and the 3.

Verse:
G#m7 C#m7 Asus2
    Today's the fourth of July
G#m7 C#m7 Asus2
    Another June has gone by
G#m7 C#m7 D
And when they light up our town
Dsus2 Dm7sus2 A F#m7 G#m7 A Asus2
I just think what a waste of gunpowder and sky

Verse:
G#m7 C#m7 Asus2
    I'm certain I am alone
G#m7 C#m7 Asus2
In harbouring thoughts of our home
G#m7 C#m7 D Dsus2 Dm7sus2 A
It's one of my faults that I can't quell my past
  F#m7 G#m7 A Asus2
I ought to have gotten it gone

Chorus:
Badd4 A
Oh, baby
  E C#m7 F#
I wonder if when you are older
Badd4 A Asus2
Some day
Badd4 A E
You'll wake up and say
         C#m7 F#
"My God, I should have told her
Badd4 A Asus2
What would it take?
Badd4 A E C#m7 F# A Asus2
But now here I am and the world's gotten colder
    F#m7 G#m7 Asus2
And she's got the river down which I sold her"

Verse:
G#m7 C#m7 Asus2
   So that's today's memory lane
G#m7 C#m7 Asus2
With all the pathos and pain
G#m7 C#m7 D Dsus2 Dm7sus2 A F#m7
Another chapter in a book where the chapters are endless
            G#m7 A Asus2
And they're always the same
  F#m7 G#m7 Asus2
A verse, then a verse, and refrain

Chorus:
Badd4 A
Oh, baby
  E C#m7 F#
I wonder if when you are older
Badd4 A Asus2
Some day
Badd4 A E
You'll wake up and say
         C#m7 F#
"My God, I should have told her
Badd4 A Asus2
What would it take?
Badd4 A E C#m7 F# A Asus2
But now here I am and the world's gotten colder
    F#m7 G#m7 Asus2
And she's got the river down which I sold her"
