Guitar Tab

From rte@Virginia.EDU (Richard T. Eppink)

I don't know how to play slide... but this is what my ears tell me:

It's in Open D.

The intro/verse part is played with a slide and goes as follows:

D----------------------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------------
F#---------------0-----------------------0-----------
D-------/3-0--/5-0---5\---------/3-0--/5-0---5\------
A----0-//3-0-//5-0---5\\-----0-//3-0-//5-0---5\\-----
D----0---------------5\\\----0---------------5\\\----

The lead in the background sounds like it is being played with a slide,
and possibly a half tone (between the fretwires rather than over the
fretwires) lower than indicated below, to give it that slightly "off" sound.

D-----0--0--2-2^0--4-4^0--2--0----0--0--2-2^0--4-4^0--5--0------
A---------------------------------------------------------------
F#--------------------------------------------------------------

And that is also repeated over and over at different parts.

At 1m50s you'll hear another little lead bit:

D--------------------0----------------------------
A---0-3--------0-3-----3--------0-3--------0-3----
F#------------------------------------------------

Also you'll notice a couple times you'll hear a chord being strummed,
I believe it to be this:

D----------------------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------------
F#---0-----------------------------------------------
D----0-----------------------------------------------
A----0-----------------------------------------------
D----0-----------------------------------------------

I think if I knew how to play slide I'd be able to pick out exactly how
that first riff is being fretted... but that's my best shot at it. Cheers.

About this song

"Loser" by Beck features a distinctive slide guitar riff played by Beck himself, using a glass slide on his acoustic guitar. The song's lo-fi production and eclectic mix of genres, including folk, hip-hop, and rock, helped it become a breakout hit in the 90s alternative music scene. Beck's deadpan vocal delivery and stream-of-consciousness lyrics added to the song's unique charm. The track also features a prominent bassline played by Beck's longtime collaborator, Justin Meldal-Johnsen.
